Scottish History Society Annual Presidential Lecture and AGM Saturday 9 March – register now!

January 17, 2019 by Annie Tindley

Event begins at 11am, with Presidential Lecture at 2pm
Meadows Lecture Theatre, Old Medical School,
Teviot Place, University of Edinburgh

The President of the Scottish History Society, Dr Catriona M. M. Macdonald, will deliver her inaugural Presidential Lecture:
Presidents and Precedents I: Contesting the Reformation: Roger Mason’s (‘sufficiently plausible’) debt to David Hay Fleming and Andrew Lang

This lecture honours the outgoing president of the Scottish History Society, Professor Roger Mason (St Andrews), and seeks to identify historiographical links to earlier writers with a St Andrews connection: namely David Hay Fleming and Andrew Lang. During their lifetimes both of these writers shaped popular appreciations of the history of the Scottish Reformation and the legacy of Mary Stuart, but they did so in contradictory ways that elucidate tensions inherent in Scottish historiography between Romanticism and Presbyterian ‘tradition’ – tensions that Mason’s work was forced to tackle a century on.

Prior to Dr Macdonald’s lecture there will be talks from recent editors of Scottish History Society volumes.

Attendance at the Lecture and AGM is free, but advance booking is requested. To book, visit:
